iTom: Free Music From Tom Smith

Music in every style -- except dull. Tom Smith, the World's Fastest Filker and the prototypical geek folk-rocker, releases new music for free download on a regular basis. (It was a song a week for almost a year.) You can subscribe to the RSS feed, purchase a better-quality MP3 of the song, or purchase three months' worth as a downloadable album.

I've got a new song up at The Funny Music Project, and it's another kids' song. At least, it claims to be.

International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day

In case you had forgotten or never known about it, this is the first anniversary of International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day.

Dunno if anyone else is doing anything for it this year, but I am! For today only, you can download a few special goodies:
  • A gift song, "Everybody Wants A Barb" (there's also a video!)
  • Another gift song, "Kate And Jaana"
  • "Something Positive", written for Randy Milholland
  • "Brothers Under The Skin", commissioned by Anthrozine
  • my concert set from EschaCon 08 on March 29 in Philly
For once, I'm gonna try to keep a rough head count. If you download something, please comment here. Also, comment if you link to this post. And, of course, link up if you have any of your own works to contribute! :)

ETA: The files are down now. Thanks to everybody, and I hope you enjoy the music!

New FuMP Song: "Stony Peak"

I'm finishing up a couple of things, and also going to PenguiCon this weekend, but I've also got some new music for The Funny Music Project -- a ditty called "Stony Peak", which asks the musical question: What if The Mighty Thor wanted to be like Roy Clark?

Sounds Familiar: "Crystal Gayle Killed Frank Herbert"

For those of you who do not Get It, this is basically the two-and-a-half-minute version of the novel and movie Dune by Frank Herbert. There's this spice called melange, y'see, and everybody wants control over it because it gives you mental powers and prescient flashes, but it's a subtle poison -- once it's in your diet, you can't stop eating it or you'll die -- and one of its more obvious side-effects is that it turns your eyes bright blue, and... oh, just get the book, it's a classic.

This was my first "big hit". It seemed a really obvious idea, and I was truly surprised no one had thought of it before -- and, as I have noticed, when I get that feeling, I've usually got a winner (e.g. "Smurfin' Safari", "500 Hats"). I premiered it at the one-shot filk at MarCon 1986, which was the first really big con I sang at, and the collective gasp of terror as the audience saw the joke coming was enough to hook me on performing for life.

The spice melange, it's so cinnamon sweet,
I put it on most everything I eat.
It's addictive, too,
And don't it make my brown eyes blue.

Dad got control over all that spice,
So Baron Harkonnen had him iced --
Tried to kill me, too,
And don't it make my brown eyes,
Don't it make my brown eyes,
Don't it make my brown eyes blue.

So me and my mother ran away across Dune,
Got found by the Fremen, not a moment too soon,
They said it was easier to leave us behind,
But if we went with them, it would stillsuit them fine.

Now I'm dreamin' of a huge jihad,
And the Fremen all think I'm God --
Maybe I do, too,
And don't it make my brown eyes,
Don't it make my brown eyes,
Don't it make my brown eyes blue.
